i've been reading English pocketbooks like Harlequinn, Mills and Boon, etc quite some time now....and I've seen the difference between the two...

- English's plot evolves on the two main characters itself meanwhile, sa Tagalog plot, kasama pati yun supporting characters like kapatid, magulang, kapitbahay, etc.

- kontrabida is kontrabida sa English characterization. lumalabas lang siya sa confrontation scenes. never siya binigyan ng sariling chapter or isang part ng chapter. mostly, just one or two descriptive paragraph is enough for them.

- conflict is more focus between the two main characters.

- mystery is mystery. because the antagonist is well hidden.

- English pocketbooks can differentiate which genre they're trying to contact with.

these are just IMO and based on my walang-sawa pagbabasa ng ebooks.

If I want a very detailed love scene, I go for English. Not all english pocketbooks are like that though.

Pinoy pocketbooks, on the other hand, are not so much on the love scene. Only a few.

PS. This is just my two cents. Wink

Maraming dahilan...

Politics
Favoritism
Personality differences between the editor (or could be the publisher too) and the author
Lacking of patience
Lacking of motivation
Attitude problems
Oppression (kasama na riyan ang issue ng royalty at copyrights)
Payment (sa ilang authors na ginagawang hanap-buhay ang pagsusulat)
Delayed outputs

These are the factors that hinder the authors creativeness to write something good...

writing should not be just because it's a job but because you like what you are doing and what you are writing...

sayang naman talaga kung maganda ung iniisip mo na plot tapos hindi rin maisusulat because of those reason mention above... eh paano kung un story pala na un ang magbibigay sayo ng break to be known internationally.... Wink

kaya madaming sumisikat na mga english novels dahil ung mga writers can write any genre that they could think of... at pumapatok sa public...

advance na naman ang mga readers natin ngayon...wide na ang horizon nila because of those english books... kaya siguro nman we can experiement na on our own kung kagagatin nga iyon or hindi...

no more long comparison..i like pinoy pocketbooks more because they are telling stories of pinay in our conservative and pure tune. although english pb's storylines are talented, (no offense) hindi pa rin nila maitatago ang kultura nilang unti-unting kumakain sa kanila..its as if there is no God na lumikha sa kanila para katakutan nila.(nila is not for all of them but to the chosen books na nabasa ko na).

English pocketbooks are thicker. When it comes to contents, no holds barred yet it also depends on the market they're targeting. More chapters. The covers are really meant to catch interest. Marami kang pagpipilian. They have historical romances, paranormal, classical, mystery...name it, mayroon ang English pocketbooks.

As of Pinoy pocketbooks, because it's from us, we could easily relate. Sariling atin. Written mostly in our language, by Filipino writers.

To be honest, Tagalog pocketbooks are very far compared to English pocketbooks, but it doesn't mean na hindi magagaling ang mga Filipino writers natin. It just happened that they're not that allowed to explore. Limitado lang ang puwedeng gawin...suppressed. Not to mention, medyo limited din ang mga resources.

wow lahat nasabi na..i totally agree with alessandra that if you prefer more love scenes go for english pbs..

it's quite understandable nmn coz filipinos are quite conservative thus the lesser love scene and conventional love scene..ung mga ibang filipino readers na shoshock pa pag medyo detailed love scene..

advantage to us readers,

pinoy pb's are easier to read cos of course it's our first language and they are quite trivial too at some point coz some local authors incorporate english and some other languages as well such as spanish, french etc...

disadvantages: same old plot over and over again..gayahan ng story..nakakasawa ung conflicts..

english pb's just like what ann said it has a really wide range of variety..pag nagsawa ka sa contemporary there's so many genres to choose from unlike pinoy pb's na ur only stuck with romance or horror..the only downside of english pb's s sometimes sa sobrang kapal ng book some parts are not that interisting (madaming palabok kumbaga)

I agree, Timz. Sobrang descriptive ng setting, character introductions, sobrang dami ng scenes...kumbaga sa hinaba-haba ng kuwento, sila rin naman ang magkakatuluyan. Maraming mga chukchakan scenes pati Razz. And that's for the typical English romance novel ha.

actually meron na rin ako nabasa na historical na tagalog by martha cecilia but i was never really happy with the way her story turned out..nakakabore and OA ang pagka archaic ng tagalog ah..as in..and the time travel..

i believe that when you're writing a series it has to have a sole theme or genre..like kunyari umikot na sa reality ung series mahirap na haluan ng fantasy un kc parang labo labo na kumbaga...
